Daisy Cigar Store

Daisy Cigar Store

The Daisy Cigar Store, located at 40 East Vincennes Street, is one of the oldest stores in Linton. The store has been in operation for at least 75 years. The present owners, Charlie and Judy Cox, bought the store in 1979, after returning to their hometown of Linton. They purchased the store from Marion Bales. In 1919, the store was called Galbraith Brothers, after the owners Henry and Mahion Galbraith. It was also known as "Cappy’s" for many years, after the owner F. M. "Cappy" Utterback.

The store contains many unique items such as the antique cherry tobacco case. The solid cherry case stands 12-feet high and has tin lining and glass fronts. At one time an old-time "wooden Indian" was on display in the store. A soda fountain from the 1940s was once used but has since been removed. An electronic cash register has replaced the cast-iron cash register also from the 1940s.

Black Formica tables between blue vinyl booths lined back to back on the west wall for local customers. An old mahogany case displays such collectibles as tobacco and cigar boxes, a tip tray, two packs of cigarettes from World War II, and a calendar published in 1900 by the Tom Moore Cigar Company.

The store is open for local business; however, about 90 percent of the Daisy business is wholesale. They sell tobacco and paper products to service stations and grocery stores in Linton, Sullivan, Dugger, Hymera, Jasonville, Switz City, Worthington, Bloomfield, Newberry, and Elnora. The local people who walk into the store are usually called by name, and the workers know what they want.

At one time local residents could pick up Sunday morning papers, but now the business is closed on Sunday. They still carry the Herald-Times, the Indianapolis Star, and the Linton Daily Citizen. The people who have bought their paper at the store for many years receive personalized copies, which are held in the back until they come to pick them up. At the present time the store has only a modern fountain machine for dispensing soft drinks and a few packaged snacks.

This information was first written in 1998. The Daisy Cigar Store is now gone out of business but has been replaced with a Double Dog Coney Shop.
