Glenburn Home

Glenburn Home

The forerunner of the nursery home was actually a mission started in the Glenburn area in 1923 during the coal-mining days in Linton. The Glenburn Mission was controlled by the Home Missionary Conferences of the Methodist Church. Deaconess Nola Yoder was in charge of the mission project in the Glenburn area at the church that was located there.

In April 1946, Yoder purchased a building that had been a mess hall at Shakamak State Park. At an auction, she paid $975 for the structure that had to be disassembled and moved. From these materials she built two 15 by 20-foot houses. Then nine more houses were added later that year. The city of Linton helped with the funding. The houses were for the elderly, who were homeless.

When the Glenburn School was closed in 1946, the building was purchased for $1,000 by the Glenburn Mission with money donated by a man and his wife in Seymour Church.  This building was later used to start the nursing home in 1950 with the conversion of Glenburn Mission to Rest Haven Nursing Home.

The kitchen and dining room were built on in 1955. The dining room seats seventy-five people. The home has five wings, which includes a barber and beauty shop, three nurses’ stations, a lounge, and chapel.

Today the home goes by the name of Glenburn Home. It is an agency of the Southern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. It is a non-profit home for the elderly and disabled. Glenburn offers 24-hour professional nursing care and related services. Dr. Ted Murphy is the administrator of the home.

Glenburn celebrated its sixtieth anniversary on Sunday, April 29, 2006. Glenburn was open to the public for the celebration which included a display, tours, and refreshments. Staff was available to answer the visitors’ questions. Pictures, stories, and memorabilia were displayed in the family room, with many of the pictures focusing on the founder of Glenburn Home, Nola Yoder.

Now there are 146 beds, 27 independent duplexes, community centers for Linton, Worthington, and Bloomfield through generations, and adult day care with 16 clients with the capability of serving more.
