Goosepond Fish and Wildlife Areas
Goosepond FWA Faqs Sheet
The Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area Property Maps are available from several sources. Maps and Rules and Regulations will be available at self-service booths located on the property. They are also available online at www.dnr.IN.gov. Many local businesses have a supply of maps as do other local IDNR properties.
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR SIGNING IN AND OBTAINING A ONE DAY PERMIT CARD?
There will be a variety of procedures utilized to allocate viewing and hunting opportunities. These procedures are outlined on the back of the most recent property map. Please be sure and obtain the most recently revised map (6/25/07) as there are significant differences from last year’s hunting procedures. There will be some reserved waterfowl hunting and some reserved upland game hunting. There will also be open draws held for waterfowl and upland hunting. Exact times and dates of the 2007-08 open draws are not yet finalized. Applications for the reserved upland hunts are in the 2007-2008 Hunting & Trapping Guide. Applications for reserved waterfowl hunts will be online and at selected IDNR properties in September. Prior to each day afield, each visitor is required to sign in at one of the self-service booths. The sign-in sheets and one day permit cards are color coded to represent different activities. The color codes are as follows:
Tan - Wildlife Watching, Hiking, Photography and Misc. activities
Yellow- Small game hunting
Blue - Waterfowl hunting
Green - Deer hunting
White - Night hunting
Simply sign the sign in sheet, obtain and fill out the one day permit card that corresponds with your desired activity for that day. At the completion of that day’s activity, finish filling out the one day permit card and deposit it in the most convenient drop box.
WHERE WILL THE DRAWINGS BE HELD?
The drawings will be held in the large pole barn adjacent to the NRCS construction office. For more detailed information regarding drawings and hunting, please refer to the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area Property Map (06/25/07 revision).
IF AN AREA IS BEING HUNTED, IS THAT AREA CLOSED TO ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES?
No. However, IDNR requests, that property visitors be courteous and respectful to each other so that everyone can enjoy their day afield. Hunting schedules will be available at the self-service booths and at the check station.
I’VE SEEN SEVERAL TRUCKS AND SIGNS THAT SAY NRCS. WHAT IS NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE INVOLVMENT WITH GOOSE POND FISH AND WILDLIFE AREA?
NRCS is responsible for the habitat restoration of the property through the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). NRCS personnel and their contractors are not IDNR employees and the NRCS construction trailer IS NOT open to the public. IDNR requests that property visitors refrain from interrupting NRCS employees as they continue their restoration work.
WHY IS A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE PROPERTY CLOSED?
The closed areas are areas that are actively undergoing construction. For the safety of workers and visitors alike, these areas will be closed to public use. As construction progresses, areas will reopen and close accordingly. It will be very important for visitors to routinely check for new closures and/or openings.
WHEN WILL RESTORATION BE COMPLETED?
The restoration has a target completion date of 2010.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT
IDNR is carefully planning for these types of facilities. It will be important for these facilities to be located in areas that offer high quality viewing opportunities while minimizing disturbance to wildlife. As restoration progresses, IDNR will continue to identify potential sites for these permanent facilities.
