Linton City Hall

Linton City Hall

The city hall of Linton, located on Northeast A Street was built in 1912, when John W. Pennington was mayor. The building was a two-story brick structure with a distinctive cupola. The building also had a garage for the fire trucks and ambulances. The mayor’s office, police department, fire department, and the utilities office were located in the building. In 1970 the building was leaning, and Mayor A. M. Risher had the problem corrected. Around 1978-1979 the jail was moved from the Linton City Hall building to Bloomfield.

In 1994 Linton bought a new city hall, located at 84-86 South Main Street. The new city hall was purchased because the old building was in need of major renovations in order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The city needed to install an elevator in the building and make major renovations to the restrooms before it would have met the Americans with Disabilities Act specifications. This would have cost the city about $300,000.

The building that houses the new city hall was formerly the twin residences of two sisters: Mary Craig and Mildred Briggs. The city bought the residence for $175,000. This is $275,000 less than a new building would have cost.

Linton is also buying the adjacent property on which a gas station was located. The city will pay $48,000 over the next 10-year period. The old gas station has been torn down and the gas pumps have been removed. The city is also having Tim Turpen of Triple T Construction move the two old green houses that are located behind the gas station.

The city eventually intends to convert the lots into a public parking lot. Mayor Jim Wright said that the workers will fill in the basements of the old houses and allow the ground to settle before paving the lot.

The new city hall houses the clerk-treasurer’s office, mayor’s office, city council chamber, and utility offices. The city also plans to put a drive-through window for the utility department to make it easier for the elderly and the handicapped. The fire and police departments continue to use the old city hall on Northeast A Street.
