Linton Mayors

Linton Mayors

Linton elected its first mayor in 1900 when it was incorporated as a city.  In addition, a city council was elected to form the governing body of Linton.  The mayor and city council are responsible for conducting the business of the city.

Prior to this time, Linton had been governed by the Board of Trustees, usually referred to as the town board since Linton was classified as a town.  However, with the coming of the railroads and the increasing demand for coal, the town began to grow.  In 1900 the population reached 3,071 and exploded to over 12,000 by 1906.  To accommodate the rapid growth in population, Linton applied to the state legislature for a city charter and received it so that a mayoral election was held in 1900.

In 1912 the city hall was built on Northwest A Street to house the city government.  The mayor’s office was located in this facility until 1994 when city hall was relocated at 84-86 South Main Street.

The mayor is elected for a four-year term.  The number of terms a mayor may seek re-election is unlimited in Linton.  The table on the following page lists the names of the mayors, terms served, and party affiliation.
