Greene County Historical Society

This page will, hopefully, give you some information about our Historical Society. They've done much work in preserving the history of our area and continue to do so. Without their hard work, many of our ancestors' burials in pioneer cemeteries, would be unknown to a lot of us. The purpose of the Society shall be to promote the historical study and investigation pertaining to Greene County and Indiana; to discover, collect, preserve, organize and, if practical, to publish the historical facts pertaining to the said County and State; to collect and preserve books, maps, genealogies, articles that will describe, or illustrate, the social, political, industrial and educational progress of said County and State.

  

Any person interested in the purpose of the Society, and who is willing to promote these purposes, may become a member by making application and paying a membership fee. The membership dues are currently $10.00 per year. There are six meetings per year: February, April, June, August, October, and December. Members receive a newsletter before each meeting.

 

History of the Society

The Historical Society began with an informational meeting in September 1972. The organization was formalized in January 1973. There were 106 Charter members. 

Presidents of the Society have included: Garvin Mitchell, James Letsinger, Charles McCoy, Gene Combs, Marsha Cline, Mary Lou Wiles, Mary Jo Brothers, Jim Prow, Mildred Uland , Betty Cox. Current President Linda Sharp.
