Cooler, Rainy Weather Delays Crops

Cooler outside temperatures require patience.  Lots of rain and cooler temps all over the United States this month may delay many gardeners from transplanting seedlings to the soil.

Plant Seedlings Arugula Young Leaflet Plants

Typically, on Memorial Day weekend, people are ready to transplant and direct sow their melons, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, and more; however, this year it’s being recommended by gardening professionals to wait at least two weeks past Memorial Day to transplant seedling and to direct sow seeds because it may just be cold enough to hinder seeds in the ground and cause transplant shock in transplanted seedlings.

If you’ve already planted, use some sort of weather shield or solar cone or cap to protect the plants as best you can against the colder temperatures.

Midges Invade Local Area

They are extremely annoying, and people mistakenly refer to them as gnats, but the extremely small pests flying everywhere in the local area have actually been biting midges.

“The bites of biting midges inflict a burning sensation and can cause different reactions in humans, ranging from a small reddish welt at the bite site to local allergic reactions that cause significant itching,” according to Purdue Extension Entomology, which goes on to state “Biting midges are extremely annoying, but none are known to transmit disease agents to humans in the U.S.”

Unfortunately, midges are hard to battle.  Some people like to use vanilla or essential oils as a repellent.  Commercial bug sprays do little to combat them, experts say.  Because these pests are small enough to get through screens covering windows, you really need to keep your windows shut. Their smallness means they can’t handle much of a breeze, though, so turning on a fan may be the most helpful if you’re planning an evening outside on the patio or deck.

Pleasant Grove Christmas Light Show

Here we are again, nearing the end of 2018, which means that it’s the most wonderful time of the year–when Pleasant Grove Farm starts their annual Christmas Light show!

According to their Facebook page, they started running the light show last night with a partial setup, but hopefully everything will be up soon:

The light show is slated to run from November 22nd to December 26th, 6pm to 10pm every night.  After Christmas, they will have a special “Patriotic” show from December 27th to January 1st.

This is always one of my favorite local events to share with my family during the holidays… so here’s a shameless plug from a video I took several years ago.  Maybe I’ll need to do an updated version of it this year…

It looks like we’ve finally made it past the long cold winter.

Every year it seems we have fewer and fewer of the stinky but beautiful Bradford Pears on main street.

West Nile Virus Found in Greene County

Mosquito - West Nile Found in GC - 07 28 14

Mark A. Miller, who serves as the Environmental Health Specialist at the Greene County Health
Department stated this morning that a sample mosquito pool taken on July 16th
by the state. The sample tested positive for the West Nile virus.

The virus has been of great concern to heath officials, as the virus produces high fever, severe headaches,
stiff neck, muscle weakness or paralysis, nausea, vomiting, and confusion. Health officials say
that prevention is the best medicine. Prevention can come in at least two forms: (1.) preventing the
mosquitoes from reproducing, and (2.) preventing mosquito bites. “Here are some tips to give to the
citizens,” Miller said:

  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET to clothes and exposed skin;
  • Wear light colored clothing;
  • Avoid wet, highly vegetative areas where mosquitoes live; and,
  • Avoid being outdoors during prime mosquito biting times, dusk to dawn, when possible.

Some simple steps to prevent mosquitoes from breeding are as follows:

  • Eliminate areas of standing water on your property;
  • Repair failing septic systems;
  • Remove any containers that will hold water;
  • Clean your clogged gutters;
  • Keep grass cut short and shrubbery trimmed because tall vegetation is an excellent harborage area
  • for mosquitoes; and,
  • Keep swimming pools chlorinated and clean.

Miller said, “The basic rule is if water lasts more than four days mosquitoes can reproduce. Even a small
bucket can produce up to a 1,000 mosquitoes in just a few days.”

Not only can humans contract the virus, but Miller reminds local residents that it can also infect domestic
animals like horses. In fact, he said the West Nile is very serious and often fatal in horses. So, if not
already done, it is very important to contact your veterinarian to get your horse immunized.

The Greene County Health Department is located at 217 East Spring Street, Suite 1 in Bloomfield,
Indiana 47424. The office may be reached by phone at (812)384-4496.

Is it finally Spring?

Main-Street-Spring-2013

Lintonians don’t need some large time-bending rodent when Spring is here.  We’ve got main street!  It might be wet and rainy, and the temperature may be dropping, but we know it’s almost time to get the tomato cages out!

Rare Find: Hooded Crane in the area

According to Brad Feaster, Property Manager for Goose Pond, an extremely rare bird has taken a stop in our area:

“We currently have a Hooded Crane on the property. This is an ultra-rare bird (perhaps only 2 or 3 ever in North America). This particular bird just spent about 3 months at Hiawassee in TN. During that time period there were approximately 2500 people from 10 states that came to see the bird.”

I’m not even a bird enthusiast, and I find this to be pretty exciting and interesting.
